This Futuristic Turntable Plays Vinyl Records in Mid-Air

MAG-LEV, the first levitating turntable, is being called the “turntable of the future for the medium of the past.” MAG-LEV Audio, a Slovenian company, developed the unique turntable for people who want excellent sound quality and innovative design. The turntable’s platter is able to levitate using a series of magnets, making it look pretty futuristic while also minimizing vibrations and improving sound quality.

The device comes with a pre-fitted tone arm and cartridge. To turn the turntable on, you simply move the tonearm into position and lower the cueing lever. At the end of your record, the turntable will lift the tonearm automatically to protect your records from being scratched. When not in use, the platter is held up by four feet, once turned on the feet automatically retract into the body of the turntable. MAG-LEV explained how levitation improves the listening experience, “By using our innovative and patented technology, we were able to achieve not only magnetic levitation, but we’ve also been able to maintain the incredibly precise turning of the platter with sensor regulating software. Air is the smoothest medium with least amount of friction, which further elevates this project into a truly unique listening experience.” The company even took power outages into consideration when creating the product. The MAG-LEV is designed with a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) system that stores enough power to lift the tonearm, stop the record and put the platter back into its resting position. An additional futuristic design feature is the subtle orange lighting on the device which enhances the visual effects of its levitation in the dark.

The MAG-LEV raised over $500,000 on Kickstarter and can still be preordered through the MAG-LEV website for a price of about $1,030 with expected delivery in October 2017.
