Icona Neo – Small Car Fit For The Big City

Icona, an Italian design house based in Shanghai, has developed a fully electric and bold concept car, the Icona Neo. This compact car is especially fit for a big city, doesn’t leave a big carbon footprint and features quite an unusual design.

The Neo concept car has a modern, sleek and asymmetrical design – taking inspiration from the asymmetrical architecture  that is seen all over the city of Shanghai. The asymmetry in the design is clearly evident due to car only having three doors. The absence of a rear left door created the opportunity for Icona to develop a car where the passengers are able to take in the city skyline a little more. Additionally, Icona explained, “It’s sharp and contrasted lines combine simple geometry and sensual surface transitions. It’s main theme consists of “anti-wedge” design construction, meant to balance the general lean-forward attitude of the car, resulting in a low front nose very close to the road and leaving more space for a generous panoramic windshield.”

The ottoman-style rear couch of the Neo and the large glass window provides better views than most traditional vehicles, in spite of the car’s small size. Also, by omitting a rear door they can improve safety by limiting entry and exit to the right side. Passenger access is made easier from the right side thanks to a much larger two-door entry and the absence of a B post. This unique three-door design is already commonly seen in many Shanghai taxis. Despite being a very compact car, with a height of about 1.5m and a width of 1.63m, Icona claims the Neo can comfortably seat four adults.

The Neo is the third in concept car designs from Icona and likely the most city friendly.icona-neo-concept-paris-6
